    Construction Celebration May 4th

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Cardinal Ritter High School Celebrates Construction of New Field

(Indianapolis) - Friday May 4th, Cardinal Ritter High School will be holding a Construction Celebration to observe the beginning of the transformation of its on-campus sports complex.  This $1 million renovation is made possible by donations made to the CREATE and TURF IT campaigns.  The celebration will get underway at 11:30 am in the Cardinal Ritter High School gym and will include the entire Cardinal Ritter student body, alumni, donors and friends of Cardinal Ritter.  Also in attendance will be student representatives from the elementary schools in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis’ West Deanery.  Through their school‘s Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) sports teams, they will utilize these new facilities frequently in the future.

This new synthetic turf field and all-weather track will expand opportunities in our athletic program.  Cardinal Ritter’s track and field team will, for the first time ever, host track meets in the spring of 2013.  Currently, the entire track schedule is made up of away meets.  The soccer teams, who had been traveling to Kunz Stadium, will now be able to practice and compete on campus.  The Raider junior varsity and freshmen football teams will trade the worn, rocky field of the past and play games on this new turfed field.  Finally, hundreds of CYO athletes from all over Central Indiana will take advantage of this new facility during their track, soccer, and football seasons.

The CREATE campaign is a 4 year fundraising campaign with a goal of $3.3 million.  These funds are being distributed across three areas:  the constant need for tuition support, facility improvements like expanding the air conditioning to include the entire school, and academic enhancements such as SMART boards, a bio-medical track, and engineering and nano-technology courses.  The TURF IT campaign is made up of parents, friends, and alumni who donated to make this new track and field a reality for the students of Cardinal Ritter.

Even in these tough economic times, Cardinal Ritter High School continues to move forward to meet the needs of our continually growing enrollment.

New Stations of the Cross dedicated

CARDINAL RITTER HIGH SCHOOL DEDICATES NEW STATIONS OF THE CROSS

The Mater Dolorosa Chapel at Cardinal Ritter High School was the site of a Holy Week celebration today as the new Stations of the Cross were dedicated in honor  of Sister Norma Rocklage, OSF of Marian University. The Stations of the Cross depict the immense love that God has for His people. It is tting that the new  Stations of the Cross are dedicated in gratitude for the ministry of Sister Norma because she is known for her self-giving love and her total dedication to serving God by caring for others.

Sister Norma is loved and admired by many people for her kindness, cheerfulness, wisdom, and patience. She seems to be everywhere – school functions, administrative meetings, sporting events, and informal gatherings – both at Marian University and Cardinal Ritter High School.  She cares deeply about both schools and generously gives of her time and energy. Despite her busy schedule, she provides spiritual guidance and direction to many grateful people, always humbly praying that she does not get in the way of God’s grace. For people who know her, she embodies the divine virtues that all Christians are called to embrace – faith, hope, and, the greatest of all, love.

Vatican names auxiliary bishop for Indianapolis archdiocese

Pope Benedict XVI has named a Massachusetts priest to be the first auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis in nearly 77 years.

The Vatican today announced the Rev. Christopher Coyne, pastor of St. Mary Margaret Parish in Westwood, Mass., would become auxiliary bishop of Indiana's largest Roman Catholic diocese. It has more than 230,000 members.

Indianapolis Archbishop Daniel Buechlein (BEEK'-line) called a news conference for later Friday.

The 52-year-old Coyne would be the first auxiliary bishop since Joseph Ritter, a future cardinal from New Albany who was installed as auxiliary bishop in 1933. He became bishop of Indianapolis on March 24, 1934, and was named archbishop 10 years later.

Buechlein, a native of Jasper who turns 73 in April, has battled health issues including lymph node cancer.

CRHS Juniors recognized as exceptional leaders

Congratulations to Cardinal Ritter Junior Emily Orbik. She just received word that she'll be Representing Ritter at the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C. this spring. According to the Dean of the NYLC, Emily will "have the unique opportunity to witness our nation's democracy in action and to interact with many of today's leaders from Congress, the executive branch, and the national news media."

CRHS Junior Joey Stevens graduated from the Indiana Young Marines on November 18th. Upon his graduation Joey was Meritorious Promoted to Private First Class for his outstanding accomplishment while a member of the 2010 Recruiting Class. The Young Marines is an organization that follows the examples set forth by Marine Corps. It stresses Leadership, Discipline, and Teamwork, while focusing on Community Service. The Young Marines have been at the forefront of the Nation's Drug Prevention efforts for the past 50 years.

Raider excels on the ice and in the classroom

Cardinal Ritter Sophomore Markus Kojo Represents Ritter every time he hits the Ice as a defenseman for the Indiana Junior Ice. Markus is an exchange student from Finland. He is living with CRHS Junior (and Junior Ice Goalie) Griffin Strain and his family.  Markus and Griffin have traveled the country from Florida to California and are proud of the Junior Ice's winning record.

According to one of Markus' teachers, Mrs. Koester: "Markus came here with a basic knowledge of the English language. At first it was a struggle for him to learn in classrooms completely taught in his foreign language. He had to work extra hard with Mrs. Saidah and complete many tutoring sessions to make up for the language difference. Markus made big improvements by the time report cards were issued and continues to improve. He was given the student of the month award for math because of his efforts. I think Markus has been challenged but he has flourished in this very diverse environment."

Over Christmas break, Markus will travel to Canada to play with Team Finland at the U17 World Hockey Challenge. You can check out Markus, Griffin and the Junior Ice a little closer to home when they play at Pepsi Coliseum this weekend.

    Outstanding 4-H’ers come from CRHS

Sophomore Joseph Sweeney recently placed first in the Electric competition at the National 4-H Engineering Challenge. Over 60 4-Hers from 12 different states competed in nine different engineering related events. Joseph took a written examination on electric and energy concepts, did parts identification, and gave a 10 to 15 minute presentation on an electric topic. Joseph was selected to represent Indiana in the competition after winning the Indiana 4-H Electric contest held during the Indiana State Fair.  Joseph has participated in the 4-H Electric project for seven years. He is a seven year member of 4-H.

In addition to this national honor, Joseph joined Cardinal Ritter Junior Sarah Gillaspy in being named the 2010 Outstanding 4-H Girl and Boy for Wayne Township 4-H. Sarah is an eight year 4-H member and is active in the Wayne Township Junior Leader group. She has been a camp counselor and was recently elected vice president for the 2010-2011 year. Sarah and Joseph both began 4-H as members of the St. Christopher Clovers 4-H Club at St. Christopher School.

Cardinal Ritter Students named National Merit Semi-Finalists for 2011

Cardinal Ritter High School students Emily Metallic and Daniel Sweeney have recently been notified that they have been named National Merit Semi-Finalists in the 2011 competition. This accolade has been awarded for having highly scored on the PSAT. The PSAT is a test that all juniors in high school across the country are required to take. Along with high PSAT scores, their excellent grades have qualified them for this event.

In the competition there are only 16,000 students from across the entire 50 states. The next step in the process for Daniel and Emily is filling out an application, writing an essay, and Thomas will attach a detailed transcript of their courses and grades received since their freshman year. If they advance to the next round, which will be announced in February, they become contenders to receive many high valued scholarships for being recognized as National Merit Scholars.

We're proud of YOU Daniel and Emily!

Cardinal Ritter Senior gives back to his parish and school

Cardinal Ritter Senior Peter Conerty is another of our fantastic students who Represents Ritter in the community. Chances are, you drive by some of Peter's work every day. CRHS Youth Leaders

Michael Arnould and Joseph Sweeney, Cardinal Ritter sophomores, have been selected to participate to the 2010-2011 class of Youth Leadership Hendricks County.  Thirty-two Hendricks County sophomores, representing all six public high schools, private schools  and home schooled students were selected. The Youth Leadership Hendricks County program helps develop their potential as leaders. Each month they meet as a group to learn more about a facet of life in Hendricks County - everything from the educational system to how the jail operates.

    Raider shines in 4-H

Sophomore Joseph Sweeney recently won the Indiana 4-H Electric Contest held during the Indiana State Fair.  4-Hers from around the state participated in the contest that tested their knowledge of the electric project.  The contest included a hands on wiring exercise as well as a written test.  Joseph received a trophy, a $500 cash award, and will represent Indiana at the National 4-H Engineering Challenge at Purdue University in September.  Joseph is a 7 year 4-H member in Marion County.

Ritter Junior digs his summer plans

Junior Joey Kurucz has spent most of the month of July on an archeological dig with the Science Explorer Club at IUPUI. The club, made up of IUPUI students and 4 high school representatives, has been digging in an Underground Railroad stop in Sheridan, Indiana. The archeologists-in-training are looking for pioneer artifacts to populate a new museum being constructed in the Hamilton County town. According to Kurucz, they have unearthed "lots of animal bones, farming equipment and buttons from old military uniforms" and have reached artifacts from the 1950’s. The dig wraps next week. Joey has enjoyed his Science Explorer Club experience and is looking forward to starting up again in the fall. He hopes to study in the biomedical field after Cardinal Ritter, with a possible minor in anthropology. Kurucz doesn't mind exercising his brain when he's away from school, saying "I'm too energetic to sit at the beach or the pool all summer."

    A Cardinal Ritter European Vacation

From June 10-20, a group of 31 Cardinal Ritter students and faculty traveled overseas to Italy, Switzerland, and France. They flew into Rome, Italy and continued on to explore the Vatican City, Assisi, Florence, and Pisa, Italy. After a few days in Italy the group continued on to Lucerne, Switzerland and went to the top of Mount Pilatus to explore and toured the city of Lucerne. After a day in Switzerland they went to Paris, France. The students had a day to walk around Paris and travel in a group around different parts including the Notre Dame, Eiffel Tower, and the Louvre. All of the students had an exciting time learning about new cultures and sightseeing. It was a memorable trip and an experience they will never forget.

    Stevens shines in summer soccer

Junior Joey Stevens spent his summer on the soccer field this year. Joey's club soccer team - Westside United '93 U17 - won their third consecutive Indiana State Championship! The team went on to represent Indiana in the National Championship series in Beavercreek, OH in June and was among 18 teams in the Midwest Regional round. Westside United cruised through the Regional Championships going 3-0 until losing to the Kansas state champs in the Regional semi-final. Stevens is looking forward to spending his fall with the Cardinal Ritter Raider boys soccer team!

    Hi-Flying Raider

Sophomore Desmond Bunnell participated in the Aviation Careers Education (ACE) Camp at Lewis University in July. Desmond has aspirations of becoming a pilot and the program gave him lots of hands-on experience. He was able to fly with an instructor, attend the Wisconsin Air Show and work with controllers at the Midway airport. He looks forward to building on this amazing experience and working toward his future in aviation.
