Advanced Math College Cr (MAT230)

This is a Dual Credit Course offered through Marian University Advanced Study Program. The following requirements have been set by Marian University.

The following admission requirements have been set by Marian University.
1. Completed application to Marian University Advanced Study Program.
2. Counselor recommendation form.
3. Minimum GPA of 3.0.
4. Submit SAT and/or ACT scores which must be a minimum of:
a. SAT – 990 Critical Reading and Math or PSAT 990 Critical Reading and Math.
b. ACT – 19 Composite or 18 Composite on the Pre-ACT.

Students are charged a discounted Marian tuition rate. Marian University allows a student to receive up to 24 credit hours. *Please note these requirements are subject to change per Marian.

AP Calculus (BC)

Prerequisite:  B- average in AP Calculus AB.

AP Calculus BC is a course based on the content established and copyrighted by the College Board. The course is not intended to be used as a dual credit course. AP Calculus BC is roughly equivalent to both first and second semester college calculus courses and extends the content learned in AP Calculus AB to different types of equations and introduces the topic of sequences and series. This course covers topics in differential and integral calculus, including concepts and skills of limits, derivatives, definite integrals, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, and series. The course teaches students to approach calculus concepts and problems when they are represented graphically, numerically, analytically, and verbally, and to make connections amongst these representations. Students learn how to use technology to help solve problems, experiment, interpret results, and support conclusions. All students enrolled in this course will take the AP Calculus BC Exam.  A TI-84+ GRAPHING CALCULATOR IS NEEDED.

AP Calculus (AB)

Prerequisite:  B- average in Honors Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry.

This course is intended for students who have a thorough knowledge of college preparatory mathematics.  It covers both the theoretical basis for and applications of differentiation and integration. Concepts and problems are approached graphically, numerically, analytically and verbally.  All students enrolled in this course will take the AP Calculus AB Exam.

Honors Probability and Statistics

Prerequisite: C+ average in Honors Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry or B+ average in 

Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry.

This course introduces students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. This course is required for students taking MAT 230/Marian in the spring.  Students complete a rigorous study of the following concepts: describing patterns and departures from patterns, planning and conducting a statistical study, exploring random phenomena using probability and simulation, and estimating population parameters and testing hypotheses. A TI-84+ GRAPHING CALCULATOR IS NEEDED.

Honors Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry

Prerequisite:  B- average in Honors Algebra II or A- average in Algebra II.

This course covers the same topics as Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry listed above. Greater emphasis is placed on applications and developing the depth of understanding and skills necessary for success in AP Calculus.  This course is required for students who plan to take AP CalculusA TI-84+ GRAPHING CALCULATOR IS NEEDED.

Pre-Calculus/Trigonometry

Prerequisite:  C+ average in Algebra II or B+ average in Algebra II (a).

This course continues the foundation concepts necessary for college-level mathematics.  Topics studied include: relations and functions, polynomials, rational and algebraic functions, logarithmic and exponential functions, analytic geometry, data analysis, trigonometry in triangles, trigonometric functions, trigonometric identities and equations, and polar coordinates.  A TI-84+ GRAPHING CALCULATOR IS NEEDED.

Finite Mathematics

Prerequisite:  Algebra II and Geometry.

This course expands students’ mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills as they cover topics such as mathematics of voting, weighted voting systems, fair division, apportionment, Euler circuits, Hamilton circuits, mathematics of networks, and game theory.  The course will encourage students to make mathematical connections from the classroom to the world after high school, while learning the importance of mathematics in everyday life. A TI-84+ GRAPHING CALCULATOR IS NEEDED.

Probability and Statistics

Prerequisite:  Algebra II and Geometry.

This course introduces and examines the statistical topics that are applied during the decision-making process.  Topics include: descriptive statistics, probability, and statistical inference. Techniques investigated include:  data collection through experiments or surveys, data organization, sampling theory and making inferences from samples.  Computers are used for data analysis and data presentation. A TI-84+ GRAPHING CALCULATOR IS NEEDED.

Honors Geometry

Prerequisites:  B- or better in Honors Algebra II or A- in Algebra II.

This course covers the same topics as Geometry, but with greater emphasis on complex direct deductive proof and indirect proof and on utilization of more advanced algebraic techniques.  Content is extended to include topics such as analytic geometry and the interrelationships of inscribed polyhedra.

Geometry

Prerequisites: Algebra II; Freshman enrollment based on a passing score on the Algebra I Proficiency test given in June.  

The purpose of Geometry is to use logical thought processes to develop spatial skills.  Students work with figures in one, two and three-dimensional Euclidean space. The interrelationships of the properties of figures are studied through visualization, using computer drawing programs and constructions, as well as through formal proof and algebraic applications.
